Five and a half years...

That is how long we having been living north of 60! Each year just keeps getting better. My poor Cape Breton husband has adjusted to the darkness, dryness and cold. It wasn't too much of an adjustment for me. Growing up in northern BC has been nearly the same experience as living in the NWT and the Yukon. I don't think anything prepared us for our time in Nunavut though. It was quite the experience.

Before we know it we will be hitting ten years... twenty years... who knows. All I know is that we are happy and content in the north, especially here in the Yukon.

I came to the North almost a year and a half ago with the intention of staying for only 11 months. I fell in love with the place and now have all of my belongings here and have signed a 2 year work contract. Everybody tells me that I will be here for a lot longer than I expect, and truthfully I do not see myself leaving anytime soon! It must be something about the Northern air that draws people in and keeps them here!!

Some people belong here, most don't. I came to the Yukon on holidays in 1985, moved to Whitehorse in 1990 and still can't seriously contemplate leaving even when it's 40 or 50 below zero. I'm pleased to hear that you're one of us :)

Welcome to our club! I came with my folks 16 years ago....for a 2 year contract :-0

I never tire of hearing that people love the Yukon and are staying!

I started out my career North of 60 before teaching in northern MB and SK a couple years. But I've been in Nunavut continuously for 5-and-a-half years now too so you have competition....haha. It began as a one year thing just for the sake of saying I lived in Nunavut before I died (hopefully not any time soon) and I got a lots of ribbing from other staff members last year about being a "lifer". Guess time will tell. No plans to go anywhere anytime soon though. So I hear your sentiments exactly. Plus its just plain cool! Ain't it?

It seems that people either love or hate the north...there's no in-between. If they like it, they end up staying longer than planned, but if they hate it, they often leave before their contract (or time) is up. As for me, I had planned to be here for one year, and almost 7 years later, I'm still here and still loving it.

Wow, that's awesome that you guys are so happy here. I'm...not really into the cold, and I don't like the long days in summer, so yeah, I'm one of those people who probably isn't going to hack it for the long term. Been here 3.5 years though!

I enjoy your blog. I just started blogging myself. I moved home to Canada after 15 years in the States. Just thought I'd say hello!
